Baxter Mayor Don O’Brien said the proposed cut in state aids to local governments was a shabby way to balance the state budget while forcing up local property taxes. He said the governor and legislators were incompetent. “Those people couldn’t run a candy store.”

The state Legislature’s failure to reach a compromise budget bill is expected to mean even greater cutbacks for area school districts and the state hospital. Rep. Don Samuelson said that Gov. Quie is faced with the prospect of making massive across-the-board cuts.

Senator Hubert Humphrey found support at the Crow Wing County DFL convention as seven of the 12 delegates selected to the district and state conventions favored him for president. Three leaned toward McGovern, one towards Muskie and one to McCarthy.

Brainerd voters, marching to the polls in rain and snow, gave Gen. Dwight Eisenhower an almost two to one victory over Harold Stassen in the GOP presidential primary. The Eisenhower votes were all write-ins. Stassen is a former Minnesota governor.

Joe Perpich scored eight field goals and three free throws to lead C-I to a 32-20 win over Balaton in the consolation round of the state basketball tournament. The Rangers meet Northfield tonight for the consolation championship.

By a fortunate circumstance, Estie McQuillin, engineer at the water works plant near the river, glanced at the river and saw two little boys fall through the ice. He dashed onto the ice and rescued George Roth, age 4, and Guy Warner, age 5, from a watery grave.
