University of Minnesota senior Del Cerney, a 1988 Staples High School graduate, finished third in the 50-yard freestyle final of the NCAA men’s swim championship with a time of 19.79 seconds. He was also a member of the Gopher 200 free relay, finishing 5th.

(Photos) All-conference honors went to Brainerd hockey players Dan Wehrs, defense, and Mark Smorong, goalie. Selected captain for the Warriors in 1983 was Todd Dahl, with Russ Hampson and Troy Holbrook as alternates.

Cornelius (Con) O’Brien, 77, pioneer resident, outstanding civic leader, and head of the mercantile firms bearing his name, died at his home at 4:40 p.m. today of a heart attack. He had been in declining health for two years and was resting on a couch, saying he felt badly.

100 years ago (1912)

J.D. Ireland, of Duluth, and Capt. Alfred Martin, of Virginia, inspected the Barrows mine of the M.A. Hanna Co. yesterday. It is reported they were well satisfied with the progress made by Supt. Roe.
