20 years ago (1992)

Stewart R. Kunde, 69, has died at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. He was remembered today as well-liked and a good speaker in his tireless work for the American Legion. Kunde was a naval aviator in World War II, retiring with the rank of commander.

30 years ago (1982)

The election of a Pelican Township clerk – already a controversy – took an added wrinkle when a township official filed charges of election violations with the county attorney. Among the charges brought were allowing non-U.S. citizens to vote.

40 years ago (1972)

The Crow Wing County Welfare Department will be known as the Crow Wing County Social Service Center after July 1st, according to Wayne Larson, director. He said the board felt the name “welfare” kept many people from using services of the staff.

60 years ago (1952)

The Pow-Wow, student newspaper at Washington High School, has just received an All-American rating from the National Scholastic Press Assn., the highest rating it awards. The editorial board is co-chaired by Diane Houle and Tom Christopherson.

80 years ago (1932)

Investigations by county and railroad officials continue into the fatal crash of a speeder handcar and an NP Railway locomotive five miles east of Deerwood. Three section workers on the handcar were killed instantly as they rounded a sharp curve.

100 years ago (1912)

The children of Hugo Schwartzkopf started a grass fire at the rear of the family house at 401 4th Ave. NE. The flames, spread to the fence, shed and boat of the neighbor, Hugo Gyllenhammer. Mrs. Schwartzkopf and neighbors formed a bucket brigade to extinguish it.
