Washington Middle School went back to the blackboard to draw a plan to alleviate overcrowding. The Brainerd City Council on Monday denied the school’s request for a variance to install portable classrooms on a lot behind the school.
30 years ago (1982)
In the early morning hours of Oct. 17, 1977, John Rieck lobbed gasoline-filled “Molotov cocktails” through the windows of the Dale Anderson home, burning it down and injuring their son. Rieck was sentenced to 30 years in Stillwater Prison, but yesterday he escaped.

(Photo) William Wroolie, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. William Wroolie, Sr., of Ft. Ripley, has been presented with the Distinguished Flying Cross for gallantry in Vietnam. He served as a helicopter door gunner while encountering heavy enemy fire.

The city council, Monday night, voted a one mill tax levy to place the city police department under a pension program. The tax will be levied until a fund of $100,000 is established. The plan would pay after 20 years service and at least 50 years of age.

“Don’t Spit on the Sidewalk. Read the Ordinance.” More than 500 such signs have been tacked up throughout town and the effect is noticeable. Sidewalks, which in some places were formerly pools of tobacco juice, are now clean and sanitary.
