Don O’Brien is ready to throw in the towel as mayor of Baxter. The veteran of several political offices will not seek re-election when his term ends. Ron Kristofferson and Donnie McPherson, incumbent council members, don’t know if they’ll run again.

(Photos) Brainerd’s Kent Johnson III caught a 10-12 walleye in 10 feet of water using a leech for bait. A Lindy Rig leech combo was used by 16-year-old Terry Koehler of Iowa to land this 10-13 walleye in 25 feet of water. Nisswa Bait Shop took the photos.
40 years ago (1972)
The Brainerd area started settling back to normal today in the wake of the long Memorial Day weekend. The lines of traffic are gone and the young campers moved out – leaving mountains of garbage behind. It was a quieter weekend overall than several in the past.

One of Brainerd’s best known and most experienced teachers, Miss Louise Barrett, reluctantly looks to June 3, the close of the school term, as her retirement after 50 years of teaching. Since 1904 she has been the principal of Whittier elementary school.
100 years ago (1912)
Unity Band, of Northeast Brainerd, will give a benefit dance at Gardner Hall on June 4. Many tickets are being sold and a large attendance is assured. Gardner Hall is equipped with a new hardwood floor, ensuring an enjoyable dance.
