Boston University wrestler Chris Studer has been appointed to the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. A Brainerd High School graduate, Studer finished last season 32-7 at 167 pounds, and placed first in the New England Universities Conference.

The 17th annual season of turtle racing will get under way on June 16 in Nisswa, with races starting at 2 p.m. in front of Earl’s Furniture store. Racers can bring their own turtles or buy them from “turtle brokers,” said Howard Wallentine, coordinator.

Approximately 1,600 students are enrolled in elementary and secondary summer sessions in Brainerd schools this year, according to Bob Gross, summer director. He said there are 691 juniors and seniors attending classes that began June 12 and run through July 21.

With construction well under way in the enlargement of the Brainerd Country Club, the committee in charge is planning a grand opening dinner for about July 1st. A dance may be held, as well. Involved is expansion of the locker rooms, kitchen and more.
100 years ago (1912)
The “Lotus” was launched by the Ingalls Motor Boat Co. of Crosby, and took to the waters of Serpent Lake like a duck. She has a 30 horsepower, four-cylinder Doman engine, is 40 feet long with an 8 foot beam. She carries 60 passengers comfortably.
