Crow Wing County Sheriff Dick Ross has appointed Skip Rudquist as administrative sergeant. Rudquist has been a police officer here for 22 years. He is team leader of the Tactical Response Team and one of two state-certified bomb technicians north of Minneapolis.

30 years ago (1982)

Boxes of fireworks worth $5,000 and an unregistered gun were found yesterday by sheriff’s deputies who conducted a search of a van driven by a man from Faribault. He has been named as a suspect in selling fireworks without a permit.

40 years ago (1972)

An electronically-driven artificial heart, developed by a former Brainerd resident, Dr. Harold Kletschka, a cardiovascular surgeon, was tested this spring with a 105-pound St. Bernard. The device is the Kletschka-Rafferty artificial heart, named after its co-inventors.

60 years ago (1952)

Camp Vanasek, the Brainerd Camp Fire Girls’ camp located on Whipple Lake, will be dedicated Sunday, according to Mrs. D. H. Fullerton, chairman of the camp committee. The camp is named for Milena Vanasek, one of Brainerd’s outstanding and most loved leaders.

Business manager D. A. Peterson, of the Brainerd baseball team, announces that they challenge any city team for a game with the proceeds going to erect a bandstand at Gregory Park, a most worthy cause. The new Brainerd Elks team may decide to try.
