Crow Wing County is stepping up its program against welfare fraud. The county has retained a full-time fraud prevention specialist and put into effect special screening programs to alert staff to possible fraudulent welfare applications.

(Photo) Ron Kristofferson of Baxter, a member of the Nisswa Guides League, hooked this pair of smallmouth bass at Lake Hubert, using Lindy Rigs and leeches. The two bass scaled 4-4 and 3-12.

About 1,500 striking miners at Crosby-Ironton are waiting for the acceptance of the terms of the steel strike settlement before returning to their jobs. The “back to work” order has not yet been received by the policy committee.

Pitching before the smallest crowd of the season, the Brainerd city team added another scalp to its list with a 6-1 victory over the Minneapolis Americans in a well played game. Jarboe and Richmond scattered 11 hits to secure the victory.

A 10-pound baby boy arrived this morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Zapffe. He is a lively, healthy youngster and the little fellow is of a studious nature. He is investigating such things as heat, light and milk, pursuing them with a scientific bent.
