Dennis Gordon finds it ironic that, as a General Tire representative in the early ‘70s, he extended Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton his first line of credit with General Tire. Gordon closed his Viking Tire shop in Brainerd partly because of competition from Sam’s Club.
30 years ago (1982)
An additional performance for the musical “Guys and Dolls,” currently running at Brainerd Community College, has been scheduled, said director Bob Dryden. Overwhelming response prompted the addition, as all scheduled tickets sold out before the opening.
40 years ago (1972)
Mike LeDoux’s two-run double to left field in the sixth inning broke up a 1-1 ball game and gave Manager Gay Zelinske’s Brainerd American Legion team a 4-1 victory over Pierz and ousting them from the sub-district tournament.
60 years ago (1952)
A special added attraction is in store at tonight’s performance of “Claudia” at the Pine Beach Playhouse. ABC Television will be filming the audience – in addition to 12 other summer theatres – for use in a special “Summer Theatre USA” program this fall.
80 years ago (1932)
Stroking six consecutive birdies and a total of nine one-putt greens, Lester Bolstad, former state amateur champion, turned in a card of 31, five strokes under par, on the 9-hole Breezy Point course. He played in a group who were all guests at the lodge.
100 years ago (1912)
Charles Sands of Missouri caught a 10 pound wall-eyed pike in Gull Lake and is having it mounted by the taxidermist. His friend, Wallace Smith, of Georgia, landed a nine pounder and will also have it mounted. They were guided by George Rardin.
