Gary Muehlhausen was appointed Tuesday to temporarily fill the council seat vacated by Mary Sterner. Muehlhausen is an employee of the Brainerd Regional Human Services Center. Sterner was named interim mayor when Don O’Brien stepped down early.

Paul Newman, movie actor and auto racer, today broke his long-standing silence while at the race track, by holding an unprecedented press conference at BIR. Newman, a yearly visitor to the raceway, has refused to give interviews in the past but spoke today.

(Photo) Flowers in abundance are blooming at the North Star Apartments this summer, due to the work of Bud Bizek, a resident. He began his beautification project May 1 and planted hundreds of bulbs and seeds. Donations helped to cover the cost.
60 years ago (1952)
The city council voted to establish a zoning committee within its own ranks. Named to the group were Aldermen George Krueger, John Stensrud and Vern Olson. The action came after a number of re-zoning requests swamped the council agenda.
80 years ago (1932)
(Adv.) Rail excursion to Duluth-Superior on Sunday, August 7. Only $1.25 round trip from Brainerd. Children under 12, half fare. Do some sight-seeing, take a steamer trip on Lake Superior. Coffee, sandwiches and soft drinks sold on board at popular prices.
100 years ago (1912)
Saturday night at 9 p.m. one engine at the power house failed and the business district was plunged into darkness for 15 minutes. There was a frantic scramble for candles, lamps and coal oil. Then a switch was thrown, the business lights came on, but all homes went dark.
