20 years ago (1992)

Jon Haapajoki of rural Brainerd has been named executive director of the Brainerd Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. Haapajoki, a member of the school board and manager for a farm machinery company, takes over Sept. 8 for Judi Smith, who resigned.

30 years ago (1982)

A Minneapolis man’s arrest on bomb threat charges last week sparked the discovery of a hidden stash of military explosives north of Brainerd. The man was being held in Hennepin County when he indicated the explosives were near the Pine Beach Road.

40 years ago (1972)

Dan Duda has become a crack pitcher for the Brainerd Braves, and proved it with a six-hitter that ousted the Aitkin Stags from the Great Central League tourney by 8-1. Dave Cheney led Brainerd’s 12-hit attack by going four-for-five at the plate.

60 years ago (1952)

Fergus Falls hard-hitting West Central Class AA team pounded out 13 hits off Brainerd hurlers, but the Braves pounded back to win a 12-10 slugfest. Hank Miles and Marv Bollig were both 3 for 5 to lead the 14-hit assault on the Fergus Falls home turf.

Barney Dreyfus, owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, has wired Frank (Hatbox) Jones of the Missoula professional team for a price on Leslie Bush of Brainerd. Hatbox set a price of $2,000 but has not yet heard from Pittsburgh manager Connie Mack as to Bush.
