Gretchen Smith didn’t have much time to celebrate her first women’s club championship at the Brainerd Golf Club. Just minutes after becoming the youngest champion (age 22) over Sandy O’Day, Smith returned to her job waiting on customers at the club.

Marv Campbell, president of Citizens State Bank here for the past 11 years, will retire next June. Warren Williams has been elected as new president and CEO. Lee Mielke has been elected president of First National Bank, replacing George Peterson, who retired.

Schaefer’s Owls captured the runner-up spot in the State Pony League baseball tournament at St. Louis Park. Jim Phleger struck out 12 to win one game and Tony Veith fanned 11 for another win. Key hits came from Kurt Stunek, Veith and Phleger.

(Photo) Largest fishing catch of the season in this area was made last week at Foley Lake by a Crosby man, Arnold Stillwell, who is shown here holding his prize 19 pound, nine ounce northern pike. Stillwell used a Daredevil lure.

Joe Ryan, Brainerd golf strokester, added another trophy to his growing list with his successful defense of his title as Pine Beach golf champion. The Brainerd shotsmith defeated C. M. Odell, of Minneapolis, 2 and 1 over 36 holes.

The secret vote taken by the Federation of Federations of railway shop employees west of Chicago decided not to support a sympathy strike for the Harriman line workers now on strike. Conditions and wages have never been better at the local shops than now.
