(Photos) Roger Ubl of Brainerd caught this 19-9 northern using a Bagley Bang-O-B. Troy Brown and Jason Allord, both of Brainerd, used bow and arrow to take these four buffalo fish weighing in at 100 pounds. Both photos taken by Nesheim Bait.

30 years ago (1982)

(Photo) It took thousands of strokes, but each one took Gail Avenson a little closer to shore in completing her 21-mile marathon swim across Mille Lacs Lake. She touched at 5 p.m., a few hours longer than she thought it would take to swim from Isle to Garrison.

Minnesota’s two best softball pitchers, Johnny Vollmar, St. Paul, and Bill Klesk, Minneapolis, will be here for the state Moose Softball Tournament with their teams. Six teams will play, including the Brainerd lodge, which won the YMCA League with an 8-1 record.

80 years ago (1932)

With nearly two-score entries already in, the Pine Beach water carnival and regatta is set for Sunday. Fire Chief Frank Fuller will corral entries in the single cylinder outboard motor race at 2 p.m. and send them over the course in Steamboat Bay to Floan’s Point.

100 years ago (1912)

Connie Mack of the Philadelphia Athletics has secured Leslie Bush, the pitching speed king of Brainerd, from the Missoula, Mont., Union League team. Bush will report when Missoula concludes its season. Mack already has Chief Bender, another pitcher from Brainerd.
