20 years ago (1992)

Subscribers to National Geographic Magazine were pleasantly surprised to find their September issue contained a 27-page layout covering Little Falls to Walker, but focusing on the Brainerd lakes area. Writer William Allard’s family vacationed here for 60 years.

30 years ago (1982)

“It certainly wasn’t a thing of beauty, but we’ll take it,” said the Motley Mets manager of their first round 10-5 victory over Lastrup in the state amateur baseball tourney. The teams combined for 11 errors, and only four of the 15 runs in the game were earned.

40 years ago (1972)

Jim Madden, of the Madden Inn and Golf Club on Gull Lake, reports that 195 golfers have registered so far to play in the 40th Annual Pine Beach Golf Tourney to be held September 8 – 10. Bob Ulsaker and Sue Markham will defend their titles.

60 years ago (1952)

Pint-sized shoeshine boys who have been keeping the boots and shoes of Camp Ripley soldiers sparkling have had a profitable summer. Splitting time between the camp and Little Falls, the 8 to 13-year-old boys have made as much as $16 on parade days.

80 years ago (1932)

The House of David baseball team, which plays Brainerd at 8 p.m., will play under their own flood lights. They carry their own portable electric power plant, said to be the largest on wheels. Bane Park will be lit by huge flood lights elevated 40 to 50 feet in the air.

100 years ago (1912)

Joseph Flanagan and family have returned from a 700 mile trip through southern Minnesota and Wisconsin in their Overland car. They came the last day from Cannon Falls, a distance of 188 miles, in 11 hours over wet and muddy roads most of the way.
