20 years ago (1992)

Richard Paulson, 52, VP of manufacturing for Potlatch’s Northwest Paper Division mill in Brainerd has been promoted to company headquarters in San Francisco. He will be replaced by Tom Palkie, 46, currently production manager of the Brainerd plant.

30 years ago (1982)

(Photo) Evert Holm, 70, owner of John M. Bye Clothing Co. in downtown, retired Friday after 52 years in retail sales. His first job was selling shoes at Montgomery Ward in Brainerd. He bought an interest in the Bye store in 1944 and became sole owner in 1952.

40 years ago (1972)

Discovery of a greenhouse in a wooded area that was used for cultivating marijuana, led to the arrest of an 18-year-old Elk Creek man. A hunter spotted the setup where plants grew in flower pots and were taken to an abandoned cabin for drying and packaging.

60 years ago (1952)

Brainerd Junior College registered its first football victory in two seasons with a 12-0 win over Itasca Junior College here. Both Brainerd TDs were scored in the second quarter, one by quarterback Jim DeRosier, the second on a six-yard blast by Jack Karnowski.

80 years ago (1932)

Election of officers and directors of the Brainerd-Pine Beach Hotel corporation were held at a meeting of stockholders. Roy Wyett, manager of the J.C. Penney store, is again president. Directors include C. T. Start, Theodore Schaefer, Art Roberts and Henry Mills.

100 years ago (1912)

Emil Johnson, the Minneapolis contractor who is to build the $20,000 high school at Pine River, has tried vainly to find men in Brainerd for carpenter work on the structure. Martin Dahl is his foreman at Pine River.
