The Brainerd School Board has certified a $6.6 million tax levy for 1982, a 15.8 percent increase over last year’s levy, or $914,000 more than 1981. The levy points to a shift in school financing where the legislature pushed the burden back to local taxpayers.

Heavy enrollments in the 7th and 8th grades this year, and a large 6th grade, are causing space problems at the junior high this year. It will continue until the enrollment bulge passes by. Enrollment at the junior high is up 153 to a total of 1,705, the highest ever.

Brainerd golfers wound up an active season with a chicken dinner and trophy presentation at Club LaGuyal. Mrs. W.E. Fitzsimons was women’s champion and Al Olson the men’s champ. The Jaycees reported on drainage work to prevent course flooding.

Thieves this week are showing a preference for cars owned by the Hitch family. Vernon Hitch had his Hupmobile stolen from in front of his home on Broadway. Mrs. Marion Hitch had her Desoto stolen when two men jumped in the parked auto and drove it away.

Brainerd football fans are following with great interest the record of Mike Boyle, former Brainerd boy, who is now a star for the University of Michigan. Word from Ann Arbor says that the plucky quarterback will be out for a week with an injury.
