Two Brainerd High School debaters declared Bill Clinton the winner of the presidential debate with Pres. George H. W. Bush. Their coach, Doug Johnson, said it was a tie, meaning that Bush lost by default. “Bush failed to deliver the punch he needed.”

The enterprising Elk River Elks forced a Brainerd fumble on the first play from scrimmage, going from there to a TD and a 27-0 halftime lead. Coach Ron Stolski’s Warriors came back with three TDs in the second half, but sustained a 33-18 loss.

Two adults and a juvenile were arrested only hours after a house was burglarized, with nine guns and $65 in old coins taken. The sheriff’s office said the guns stolen from the Marv Mertens residence were recovered in the burglars’ car, but not the coins.

The newly christened township of Lake, being certain territory detached from Klondike, will have to choose another name, as there is a Lake township in Wabasha County. A suggested name would be Woolford Township, to be named after Uncle Dick Woolford.
