20 years ago (1992)

Crow Wing County Auditor Roy Luukkonen politely danced around the issue of why the voting results were not tabulated until 10:30 a.m. this morning. But employee Jim Eder was more succinct, saying of the new optical scanning system: “It’s worthless.”

30 years ago (1982)

Crow Wing County voters headed to the polls in such numbers they swamped election judges. In 13A, Paul Thiede won in a tight race. Steve Wenzel defeated Howard Warnberg in District 13B, and Don Samuelson beat Gene Goedker for State Senate.

40 years ago (1972)

A proposed new city charter (the first revision since 1908), Sunday liquor and a host of races are on the ballot for Brainerd and Crow Wing County next Tuesday. Brainerd voters will once again be making use of voting machines, which speed up tabulation.

60 years ago (1952)

Brainerd citizens began flocking to the polls early today, and a 1 p.m. check by the Dispatch revealed the heaviest early voting in the city’s history. Votes in the nine precincts came to 2,226 compared to 1,532 at the same time in the 1948 election.

80 years ago (1932)

The debate at the opera house Saturday evening attracted a large audience who had the pleasure of hearing two good campaign speakers. Col. Freeman Thorp of Hubert spoke for the Republicans, and Beecher Moore of Minneapolis for the Socialists.
