Jim and Diane Runberg have a vested interest in the international relief effort in Somalia. Their son. As U.S. troops landed on Somalian soil, Joe Runberg may have marched among them. He is a Marine sergeant based out of Twenty-Nine Palms, California.

30 years ago (1982)

Don Dravis has coached Staples to three consecutive Class A state wrestling titles. If last night’s 52-8 trouncing of Brainerd is any indication, the Cardinals are headed for four in a row. Staples had six pins. Only Brainerd wins were Bob Waytashek and Jim Caughey.

40 years ago (1972)

Inability to cope with the big man again spelled defeat for Coach Jerry Vanek’s Warriors, who fell apart in the final canto to lose 64-48 to Staples. The Cardinals only outscored Brainerd 25-23 in field goals, but hit 12 of 21 free throws to Brainerd’s 2 of 9.

60 years ago (1952)

If familiarity breeds contempt, a small Pequot Lakes basketball team should hold no love for this year’s Warriors. Paced by little Bill Smith’s 22 points, Brainerd submerged Pequot by a score of 52-9. Little was learned about Warrior prospects; it was too easy.

100 years ago (1912)

State Auditor Iverson has notified County Auditor Smart that a new name will have to be chosen for the township designated “Clover,” as there is a Clover Township in Pine County. The names Mission and Woolford are OK for the other two new townships.
