20 years ago (1992)

Fred Casey, in his fifth term as a member of the Brainerd School Board, officially resigned to become a judge in January, a position to which he was recently elected. “We want to publicly say what a fine job you’ve done,” said board chair Jon Haapajoki.

30 years ago (1982)

40 years ago (1972)

While many area residents bundled up or stayed inside to avoid the cold, Bill Matthies, local diver, was at the bottom of the Mississippi River. He was hired by Northwest Paper to cut metal pilings off with a torch in 12 feet of water. He said he was nice and warm.

60 years ago (1952)

The licenses of two liquor stores were suspended for 30 days and 10 days for selling liquor to minors. The city council also warned all liquor dealers that there would be strict enforcement of Ordinance 459, which forbids selling liquor to a woman at a counter or bar.

80 years ago (1932)

This year an army of mothers know their children have too little food and not enough clothing to keep them warm. Fathers can do nothing to help their families. The Dispatch is adopting a family for Christmas from this list; won’t you adopt one, too?

100 years ago (1912)

The Virginia Mining Company’s mine at Barrows is cross-cutting at the 160 foot level and hoisting daily about 100 tons. Ore of good quality is being found. The Brainerd-Cuyuna Mining Co. is considering sinking a shaft on its lands in south Brainerd.
