The Brainerd Fire Department was called to numerous fires over the Christmas holiday, forcing fire fighters to battle not only fires but frigid weather. One call was to Cragun’s Lodge and Conference Center where a cabin next to the main lodge was gutted.

Walter Koep is a happy man these days and has good reason to be. Manager of the Brainerd Super Valu, Koep was one of 31 nationwide named as “Best Supermarket Manager” by the National Alliance of Supermarket Shoppers.

Baudette, now 3-1, climbed into the No. 3 position in the north half of Region 8 hockey with a 6-2 win over Brainerd. They trail Warroad and Roseau, both unbeaten. The Warriors, at 2-1, are in 3rd place in the south behind Bemidji and Moorhead.

Being a Christmas baby is something, but the son of the Donald Smiths of Pine River is special. The only area child born on the 25th arrived in the car during a wild auto dash from Pine River to St. Joseph’s hospital. The sisters finished the delivery outside the hospital.

After Brainerd beat Cass Lake in basketball on Thursday, their coach said Bemidji would beat the Warriors by at least 20 points. Well, Brainerd beat Bemidji Friday by 28-14, shattering his abilities as a prophet, and showing Bill Dammann has another good team.

The other day Frank McGuire, train dispatcher, told W. Larrabee to get him the biggest turkey he could find on the market. And the chef at the Ideal Café surely did, for he produced a turkey weighing 30 pounds.
