20 years ago (1992)

Bruce Backberg is thankful to be alive after surviving several minutes of terror when a gunman shot up a Bemidji bar where he was playing as drummer for the Lonesome Road Band. The Riverton resident said a shot went through his drum, missing a woman hiding behind it.

30 years ago (1982)

(Photo) Jessica Beachy, a 5-6 junior guard with a deft touch from 15-18 feet, and the quick hands and moves to baffle taller opponents, scored 12 of her 23 points in the last quarter as Staples beat Brainerd 46-33 to win the latter’s holiday invitational tourney.

40 years ago (1972)

(Photo) This 12-4 walleye was caught in Mille Lacs Lake (Garrison end) by LaVerne Tutt on a minnow at mid-day. Mrs. Tutt, of Tutt’s Minnows in Garrison, displays the lunker, largest caught in this area this winter.

60 years ago (1952)

First compilation of scoring in the Northern Junior College conference shows Brainerd’s Gup Hess in third place sporting an 18 points-per-game average after six games. Hibbing’s Bob McDonald leads the field with a 25.5 per game average.

80 years ago (1932)

Approximately $3.1 million was spent this fall by 71,840 deer hunters in the state. They obtained about 40,000 deer, which at that rate makes the cost of each deer $89.90. Two years ago there were 65,260 hunters. Deer season is only every other year.

100 years ago (1912)

Fully 500 people enjoyed the fine ice skating at Boom Lake on Sunday afternoon and evening. The ice is being cleaned and kept in good shape by a group of south side boys. The lake is really the only rink in or near Brainerd and is thus well patronized.
