(Photo) Baxter Snowmobile Club members laid the groundwork Saturday for the 7th Annual Time Trials at the Quarterdeck on Gull Lake. The event draws racers from a three-state area and features radar runs and drag races for snowmobiles and 3-wheelers.

Don Samuelson, DFL-Brainerd, serving his 3rd term in the legislature, and Howard Smith, DFL-Crosby, his 4th, are receiving their committee assignments today. The DFL controls both houses of the legislature and the governor’s office for the first time.

Brainerd’s city officials are exploring every possible way of securing better railroad crossing protection, said Councilman Vern Olson. The issue, which will come up at the council meeting, is prompted by the tragic death Sunday at the 13th St. crossing.

Roundup of all tramps and transients continued by police searching for a man who ransacked the Riverside Grocery in West Brainerd and later threatened an apartment house janitor. The man ate food in the store and then left with 6 cartons of cigarettes.

Barrows, the mining town to our south, is destined to enjoy the biggest boom in its history. The Virginia Ore Mining Co. is making great improvements at the mine and ten new houses will be constructed. A two-story brick hotel will also be constructed.
