20 years ago (1993)

A few weeks ago John Goplen was fishing off the coast of Baja California near Cabo San Lucas. The temp was in the 80s. Today he’s getting ready for the 3rd Jaycees $100,000 Ice Fishing Extravaganza set for Gull Lake on Saturday. Temps are expected in the teens.

30 years ago (1983)

Two women were threatened by a young male with a gun as they walked from the Moose Club to their car last night at about 10:30 p.m. He said, “All right ladies, give me your money or I’ll kill you.” They leaped into their car and the man ran away.

40 years ago (1973)

Wyatt Schultz came off the bench late in the 1st quarter to score 15 points, including a pair of baskets in OT, to give Coach Jerry Vanek’s Warriors a 71-70 victory over Wadena. It was Brainerd’s third straight win in a tough week of competition.

60 years ago (1953)

The old flu bug, disguised as sore throat, headaches and general aches and pains has hit the Brainerd school system. Washington High School is averaging absenteeism of 150 students compared to normal 35. Franklin has 113 absent today when normal is 20.

80 years ago (1933)

The Brainerd Building and Loan Assn., organized in 1922, has been a factor in the upbuilding of Brainerd, furnishing prospective home owners with loans to build and others with loans to remodel. The average loan made has been $2,000.

100 years ago (1913)

One of the most exasperating breakdowns the local power station has had occurred at 7:50 this morning when an air compressor broke down. For over half a day Brainerd has been without any light or power and business has been greatly inconvenienced.
