Eight Brainerd entrants in the I-500 Snowmobile Race hope for a home advantage as the course comes through Brainerd. Racers include Tom and Craig Feierabend, Kevin Spielman, Eric Loge, Paul Tollefson, DJ Dondelinger, Greg Watland and Jeremy Fyle.


30 years ago (1983)

(Photo) Clouds of steam rose in the air yesterday as Dave Schubert, his neighbors and sons placed red-hot iron rims on wooden buggy wheels. Schubert is one of the few wheelwrights to still practice the craft.

40 years ago (1973)

The sheriff’s office here is looking for three would-be burglars who attempted to break into the store owned by Bob Moberg in Pine Center at 3:30 a.m. Moberg surprised the trio and fired shots into the air from his pistol. The would-be burglars fled.

60 years ago (1953)

Naming a committee to plan an industrial brochure for Brainerd was the main business at a meeting of the Industries Committee of the Brainerd Civic Assn. All agreed that promotion of Brainerd for industry must be done in an attractive manner.

80 years ago (1933)

Brainerd’s high school Warriors cast a wary eye toward C-I in anticipation of this classic game next week. Brainerd hurdled its first major obstacle toward a district championship when it routed Wadena 32-22 in a well-earned victory.

100 years ago (1913)

According to recent figures compiled from marriage license records, 1912 saw 172 marriages here, more than either 1911 or 1910. Remarkably, the most licenses were issued in the coldest months, with 30 in November and 22 in December.
