Bresnan Communications will add eight channels and an optional service, slightly raising cable rates. Full service subscribers will pay $22.50 monthly for 35 channels, up from $19.50 for 27 channels. The new channels include CNN and Midwest Sports.

The first official meeting to elect officers of Brainerd Improvement, Inc. will be held March 7. The organization was formed to develop and improve the core downtown area. It has sold the initial 200 shares of stock and hopes to sell 200 more in its first year.

Over the course of years and many rugged contests, Brainerd fans thought they’d seen it all. But fans at the Brainerd Junior College 58-56 win over Eveleth watched as “Gup” Hess heaved in a 67-foot shot that was all net with one second left in OT for the win.

80 years ago (1933)

A greatly improved Red Devils hockey team shook the jinx that has pursued it this season by scoring a decisive 5-1 victory over Wadena. Brainerd had 39 shots on goal, a season high, and Fox in goal only allowed the one score while Lukens was in the penalty box.

The caretaker of the Gull Lake Dam presents these figures for January weather: Snowfall was 5.2 inches, with 5.4 inches on the ground. High temperature was 37 degrees and low was -32 degrees. Average high was 5.92 degrees and average low was -7.35 degrees.
