Forrest Kobs grew up outdoors on his family’s acreage near Pine Lake in Aitkin County. The natural world was his living room. Today, the sculptor expresses in his stoneware the aura of nature and the deeper political and social implications he sees.

30 years ago (1983)

Kevin Stunek – the airport fire fighter who was suspended after a fatal plane accident – was not only completely exonerated, but was lauded as a hero. Airport commission vice-chair Howard Blanck said Stunek would be reinstated to his position immediately.

40 years ago (1973)

The Brainerd Junior College Red Raiders shot 60 percent in the second half and dominated the boards to top Northland 80-74. The Raiders evened their mark at 4-4 as Jeff Hansen drilled 22 points and Mick Timmons added 15.

60 years ago (1953)

Art Cave, local restaurant owner, has received a telegram that his mother and brother are safe after a tidal wave hit their home on Caveny Island, near England. The telegram stated that they were evacuated to London, where they are staying with relatives.

80 years ago (1933)

Is dancing in the schools sinful? Brainerd ministers are divided on the question, and 15 of 18 Minnesota high schools contacted said they sponsor more dancing than is allowed here. Parents have been surveyed and the school board will discuss the matter tomorrow.

100 years ago (1913)

At yesterday’s city council meeting, the council received a claim of $690.96 from former police captain Henry Hurley. It represents pay from the time he was dismissed in March, 1912, to date. He claims he was not given a hearing when he was discharged.
