“Play of the Game” honors Thursday night at the Baxter baseball diamonds go to the coach who saw lightning flashing closer and closer and called the game. He did the right thing by saying “This is just a game of baseball. I’ll concede the game.” Safety first.

(Photos) A walleye weighing 10-13 was caught by Barb Cote of Brainerd, using a leech in 20 feet of water. This 16-10 lake trout was caught by Mary Davis of Pine River. She used an Apex spoon and was guided by Pete Hanson.

The game and fish office of the DNR has advised eating only one meal per week of fish taken from the Mississippi River in the stretch that includes Brainerd. Mercury levels are not alarming, but it is considered a wise precautionary measure.
60 years ago (1953)
The Crow Wing County chapter of the National Polio Foundation is still $17,000 in the red from the 1952-53 polio epidemic. A total of $5,475 was collected in the March of Dimes campaign but they have asked the national foundation to help pay bills.
