If the vote had been taken yesterday, Crow Wing County would now own the old MnDOT complex on Laurel Street. Three members spoke in favor because of need for storage and growth in the county. Members Mary Koep and Art Wagner were opposed.

30 years ago (1983)

It isn’t totally true to say Hasse’s Drop Inn restaurant came about by “accident.” But Don Hasse, an over-the-road trucker, smashed up his rig one day. His new bride, Karen, said no more driving. So they bought the restaurant and the success of it is now history.

40 years ago (1973)

Merle Gallant took his first clean-sweep in late model racing at North Central Speedway, as he won the second heat, trophy dash and feature. Gallant took early leads in all three races and finished strong for the three wins.

60 years ago (1953)

Tentative plans for the proposed Brainerd hospital for mentally deficient children call for an expenditure of about $6,500,000 on buildings to house 500 patients. Negotiations to purchase the 80-acre tract of land east on Oak Street are nearly complete.

80 years ago (1933)

One of the biggest black bass brought to Brainerd this season was caught last evening at South Long Lake by Billy McCollough. Taken on a red head plug, it weighed just over 7 pounds. The same boy caught a 4-pounder just a few minutes before.

100 years ago (1913)

In the shooting tournament of the Riverside Gun Club on the 27th, G.E. Trent, Sr., the only professional, broke 145 of 150 targets but could not compete for the amateur prize money. Artie White broke 143 for the amateur crown, with Nashold 2nd at 141 of 150.
