The Warriors won their 7th annual volleyball invitational for the first time with a 15-8, 15-7 victory over Deer River in the 8-team event. “It’s a nice feeling,” said coach Carl Schirmer. “We’ve finished second three or four times over the years.”

(Photo) Mayor C. Elmer Anderson presents Brainerd’s Tower Award to Judge Robert Ryan at the airport re-dedication ceremonies, where some 5,000 attended during the day. Ryan chaired the Airport Commission during construction of the new facility.

An inexperienced and lightweight Superior East team proved no match here for Coach Ed Tonish’s Warriors, as Brainerd ground out a 43-6 victory. Tonish threw in his reserves, with 38 players seeing action. Brainerd’s 189-pound average defensive line was stalwart.
