Many might assume that, with recent bitter weather, all area lakes are completely frozen. But there are at least seven open water areas said Sheriff Dick Ross, who noted nine snowmobilers have gone through the ice in recent weeks. Fortunately, all survived.

Frigid weather covered Minnesota and much of the upper Midwest today as temperatures dropped to -48 in Bemidji and 45 below zero at the Brainerd airport. Most Brainerd children reported for school this morning, except for the very young.

100 years ago (1914)

The 10th graduating exercises of the Northern Pacific Railway hospital training school for nurses will be held Friday at the Elks Hall. Seven nurses will be graduated. Dr. Coventry will deliver the graduating address and a dance will follow.
