He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. E.H. McGonagle; his mother, Edleen; and brother, E. Richard.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Vivian; son, Todd; grandson, Duncan; aunt, Jean Peterson; cousins and friends.

Lew served in the military in World War II in a meteorology unit and in the Signal Corps in the Philippines. Lew graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Pharmacy. He was employed at the University of Minnesota Health Service and retired after 23 years as chief pharmacist at Glen Lake State Hospital and Oak Terrace Nursing Home.

His retirement years were greatly enjoyed at his lake home where he spent many happy hours with his cherished lifelong sports of boating, water skiing and sailing. When he saw water skiing in early newsreels he made water skis and began with friends giving water ski shows.

Lew felt humbled and honored to receive the Gift of Life with a liver transplant in 1993 from a gracious donor family. His survival of 19 years is unprecedented. The family extends appreciation to the staff at Park Nicollet Medical Center and Methodist Hospital for their loving care.

Services will be held at Grace United Methodist Church in Pequot Lakes, Minn., on March 17, with visitation at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. If desired, memorials may be given to Grace UMC, Mayo Clinic Liver Transplant Center or Hamline University. Cremation Society Edina Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

I've worked at the Brainerd Dispatch with various duties since Dec. 7, 1983. Starting off as an Ad Designer and currently Director of Audience Development. The Dispatch has been an interesting and challenging place to work. I'm fortunate to have made many friends, both co-workers and customers.
