George L. Crust

Age 88, of Birchwood, WI died Tuesday December 5, 2017 at the Mayo Clinic Health System - Northland in Barron, WI surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on May 28, 1929 in Brainerd, MN to Ernest and Irene (Taylor) Crust. George graduated from the Washington High School in Brainerd in 1947. He then worked for Northern Pacific Railroad as a Wireman/Electrician. George then joined the 198th Tank Battalion National Guard which was activated at the beginning of the Korean Conflict on January 1, 1950 and was discharged in October of 1952. George began his college education at the University of Minnesota obtaining an AA Degree. He continued his college education on a piece meal basis, completing it in 1968. George had majored in Sociology and began working in 1965 for the Department of Correction as a Guard at the Stillwater State Prison. Upon completion of his college he became a caseworker in 1968 and retired July 1991 as Director of Information System.

George married his sweetheart Audrey Fae Hagen on September 5, 1953 in Starbuck, MN. They lived in White Bear Lake, MN having moved there in 1961. After retiring in 1991, George and Audrey moved permanently to Loch Lomond retirement community near Birchwood, WI. They had been camping in that community since 1968. George remained very active in Aging issues, serving many years as President of the local senior center in Birchwood; serving several years of the advisory committee for Washburn County; several years on the Board of the Northern Area Agency on Aging. He also served on the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups, earning a Wisconsin Statesman Certificate for completing a course in Wisconsin Government Procedures. In addition he also maintained an active role in his chosen church, Trinity Lutheran serving several terms as Council President and other committees. George loved his Father in Heaven, His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit who continually guided him in all his life's endeavors.

He is survived by a son, Jeff Crust (Cathy Hallamek) of North Branch, MN; 2 daughters, Tami (Todd) Mortenson of Brooklyn Park, MN and Teresa Crust of Forest Lake, MN; 6 grandchildren, Ashley (Nate), Robert, Layla (Jesse), Nichole (Jeff), Brandon (Stephanie) and Michael (Cassie Eberhardt); 7 great grandchildren, Giana, Gemma, Hunter, Alyse, Annabelle, Grason and Brayden; 2 sisters, Judith Blocker of Brainerd, MN and Kathleen (John) Erickson of Richfield, MN; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Crust; his parents, Ernest and Irene Crust; 2 brothers, Clark Crust and Ernest "Skip" Crust; 3 sisters, Marian Heyer, Joyce (Schutt) Terrel and his twin, JoAnne Walters.

Funeral Services will be held at 11AM Saturday December 16, 2017 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Birchwood, WI, Rev. Lauren Ley officiating, with interment in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Birchwood, WI where Military Rites accorded him by the Birchwood American Legion Post. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the Funeral Service at the Church. Appleyard's Home for Funerals in Rice Lake, WI is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciated to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Birchwood or the Birchwood Senior Center.
