Gerald 'Jerry' Garlie

GARRISON — Jerry Garlie, age 74, of Garrison, passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at his home in a house fire. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 4 at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield with burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with military honors. Fort Snelling burial to be scheduled at a later date. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the Bierman Funeral Home and Friday for one hour prior to services.

Gerald Vyrone Garlie was born Feb. 15, 1937, in St. Paul, the eldest son of Adolph and Marion (Perra) Garlie. He was raised in Northfield and graduated from Northfield High School in 1956. He joined the U.S. Army in 1957 and served overseas. He married Theresa Huss in 1957, and the two had five children. They divorced in 1981. After his discharge, the couple moved to the Minneapolis area where Jerry was employed by Insulation Sales Co.

In 1969, the Garlie family moved to Cannon Falls, Minn., where Jerry owned and operated Northwest Silo and Storage Systems Inc. In 1989, Jerry moved to Apple Valley, Minn., where he worked for Green Tree Finance. He married Linda (Meidal) Gugat in 1991. When Jerry retired in 2000, he and Linda moved to Brainerd. In 2005, they bought their home at the North Star Resort on Lake Mille Lacs.

Throughout his life, Jerry enjoyed hunting and fishing, riding his motorcycle, flying private planes and golfing. In his later years, Jerry toured the country by motor home, visiting family.

Jerry Garlie is survived by his wife, Linda, who is recovering from severe burns; daughter, Gina Garlie and husband, Hans Castren, of Kalispell, Mont.; sons, Jim Garlie, of Las Vegas, John Garlie and wife, Joanne Wojcik, of Golden, Colo., Paul (Mary) Garlie, of Savage, Minn., Michael (Jennifer) Garlie, of San Francisco; brothers Tom (Connie) Garlie, of Cushing, Minn., Wayne Garlie, of Arizona, David (Barbara) Garlie, of Northfield, Minn.; sisters, Marianne (Tim) Moe, of Alexandria, Minn., Ginger Garlie, of Stillwater, Minn.; stepchildren, Tina (Scott) Melichar, Chris (B.J.) Gugat, Dee (Derek) Uutela; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Steven.
