Roy W. Zierke

PONSFORD — Roy Warren Zierke, 75, of Ponsford, Minn., died on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at the St. Joseph’s Area Health Services in Park Rapids, Minn., after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Roy Warren Zierke was born on Jan. 5, 1936, in Brainerd, Minn., the son of Roy and Ivy (Hall) Zierke. He attended school in Crosby and Brainerd.  Roy lived in several places over the years including Burnsville, Minn., Colorado, and Savage, Minn., before moving to the Ponsford area in 1997. He retired in the fall of 1997.

Roy was never still a moment. He was a hard worker and kept working right up to the end. Roy retired in the fall of 1997. He never wanted anyone to worry about him and if he was having any problems. He belonged to the Teamsters and the 49’ers unions. He always worked in heavy equipment.

Roy won numerous awards for marksmanship. He loved to fish, hunt, bowl, work with leather, and he was a very good carpenter. He enjoyed to cook; pies and soups were a couple of his specialties. He enjoyed his hobby farm. Roy loved his animals especially his St. Bernard, Jake. Roy and Cheryl enjoyed feeding and watching the deer. He enjoyed the mountains. He also was one that never turned down a cold beer.

Roy is survived by his wife, Cheryl Lyn Zierke, of Ponsford, Minn.; his children, Michelle Suzanne (Zierke) (Tony) Scarletta, of Long Beach, Calif., Aaron Troy Zierke, of Brainerd, Minn., Bryan James Larson, of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nona Arlene (Calvin) Peterson, of Brainerd, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Ivy (Hall) Zierke; brother, Calvin; a sister, Arla Ahlgrim; and his former wife, Dorothy (Brown) Zierke.

At Roy’s request there will be no public funeral will be scheduled. A celebration of life will be held this summer for family and friends at Roy and Cheryl’s home.
