UPDATE: Final Minnesota legislative bills may be passed in middle of the night

CROSBY — Leslie Dean Popkes, age 78, of Crosby, died on May 31, 2011, at the Cuyuna Regional Care in Crosby. He was born on Sept. 27, 1932, in George, Iowa, to Reemt and Hattie (Harberts) Popkes. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean conflict.

Les was a former owner and operator of bakeries in Salem, S.D., and in Crosby, Minn. He was also an owner and operator of a dairy farm near Backus. 

Survivors include six sons, Bobby (Linda) Popkes, of Arlington, S.D., Ricky (Tricia) Popkes, of Canistota, S.D., Terry (Kim) Popkes, of Badger, S.D., Tracy (Erica) Popkes, of Merrifield, Minn., Landy (Melissa) Popkes, of Pine River, Lenny (Eden) Popkes, of Pine River; five daughters, Tammy (Kevin) Lundquist, of Queen Creek, Ariz., Cathy (Stan) Janssen-Cordrey, of Lake Norden, S.D., Vicky (Jeff) Urquhart, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Becky (David) Schmid, of Backus, and Holly (Joseph) Tisdell, of Milaca, Minn.; three brothers, Henry (Charlotte) Popkes, of Mount Pleasant, Mich., Ron (Ann) Popkes, of Des Moines, Iowa, Jerry (Ardis) Popkes, of Erwin, S.D.; one sister, Alma (Ernie) Ehlers, of Stockton, Calif.; 25 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife, Ruby; son, Micky; two brothers, Stanley and Merle Popkes; and one sister, Darlene Wrege.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. on Friday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Crosby. Burial will be at the Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby with full military honors. Friends may call on Thursday at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Friday one hour prior to the services at the church.
