After 50 years: U.S., Cuba to restore diplomatic relations

Ellen Johanna Yde Marlow Simi, 101, was led to heaven by angels on Thursday, August 4, 2011 with her daughters by her side. She was a long-time Sylvan Township and Brainerd resident. Ellen was born on November 9, 1909, to Peter and Ellen (Henrickson) Yde in Sylvan, Minn.

She attended grade school at Rural Sylvan Township School and graduated from Pillager Public Schools. She later attended Brainerd Junior College. Ellen was a cook at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Brainerd for 20 years. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Brainerd, as well as the Eastern Star and Eagles Club. Ellen loved politics, especially presidential elections. She also loved reading, sewing, gardening, cooking, and fishing. She lived at Whispering Pines Nursing Home in Pine River the past two years. Ellen made many friends with her loving caregivers.

It was an honor being raised, loved, and nurtured by this remarkable and beautiful woman.

A special thank you to granddaughter, Kim Marlow-Vetsch and nephew, David Yde, for their loving care.

Ellen is survived by children, Karen Marlow, and Nancy Marlow; daughters-in-law Marlys Marlow and Gabriella Simi; along with step-daughter Arlene (John) Konzem. She has 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. Many nieces, nephews, and friends also survive her.

She is preceded in death by her parents; first husband Jack F. Marlow; second husband George A. Simi; son Joseph P (Marlys) Marlow, C.M. Sgt. USAF 33 years; daughters, Betty E. (George) Franklin, Marilyn J. (Charles) Gendron; step-son Dr. Arlen G. (Gabriella) Simi, D.D.S.; great-granddaughter Jessica (Gendron) Gaspard; eight brothers and seven sisters.

Funeral services for Ellen will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd, with Father Steve LaFlamme officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. A gathering of family and friends will be at the church following burial at Sylvan Cemetery, Sylvan Township.
