Gerald A. “Jerry” Benson


Gerald A. “Jerry” Benson, age 76, peacefully passed away at his home on Nov. 10, 2011.

Jerry was born May 13, 1935, in Duluth, Minn., to Ben and Helen Benson. Jerry graduated from Washington High School (Brainerd) in 1953 and went on to graduate from Brainerd Junior College. He had a 35-year career at Bremer Bank. Jerry served in Kiwanis for 45 years. He was a very involved member of St. Francis Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus for over 50 years. He served many years as a board member for the following organizations: Chamber of Commerce, Camp Confidence, Brainerd Civic Center, Paul Bunyan Vacation Tourist. He was an active member of Elks Lodge, Brainerd Quarterbacks, Sports Boosters, Jaycees and proudly served in the National Guard for 10 years.


Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years Elizabeth (Liz); children Kathy (Ted) Dullum of Nisswa, Cheryl Benson (Jim Kelsea) of Brainerd, and Jeffrey (Julie) Benson of Pequot Lakes; grandchildren, Jessica (Jason) Murray, Teddy Dullum (Karli) Tony Dullum (Lucy), Leah Jones, Emma and Jack Benson; and great grandchildren Jake Murray, Tre’ Jones and Aubrey Dullum. He is also survived by his sisters Charlotte Hill of Osseo and Janice Herzog of Maple Grove, and many nieces and nephews.

Jerry was a devoted husband and proud father and grandfather, full of unconditional love and support. His care and concern for others set an example for all. He will remain in our hearts forever and will be deeply missed.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday Nov. 15, 2011 at St. Francis Catholic Church and a viewing one hour prior. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Nov. 14, 2011 with family present in the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home.

A memorial will be established in his name and may be directed to St. Francis of the Lakes Catholic School.
