Doris J. Stoffel

Doris Jeanette (Nesseth) Stoffel, age 86, of Brainerd, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at Harmony House in Brainerd. She was born on June 25, 1925, in Elk River, Minn., to Ole and Helma (Nelson) Nesseth. She grew up in the Elk River and Litchfield area. Doris married Gilbert Stoffel on Oct. 3, 1945, in Litchfield, Minn. They had two daughters, Barbara and Mary. Doris’ husband, Gilbert, passed away May 11, 1976. Doris worked at Montgomery Ward in the credit office and then in the paint and hardware department for approximately 18 years until her retirement in 1985.

Doris joined the American Legion Auxiliary and was quite active as a volunteer. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. She was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary three years, and was 6th District American Legion Auxiliary President for one year. Doris was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd for 45 years and was a member of the St. Jude Guild. She volunteered at St. Francis Church and the American Legion whenever help was needed for funerals, weddings and other occasions.

Doris enjoyed traveling, being with family and friends, knitting and crocheting, and was an avid bingo player. Her daughter, Barb, passed away in March 1998. Doris enjoyed being with her daughter, Mary, whether it was attending church together, playing bingo, etc.

Doris will be greatly missed by her daughter, Mary Stoffel, of Brainerd; and other family and friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilbert Stoffel; her daughter, Barb Andresen; six brothers; and two sisters.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd with Father Tony Wroblewski and Father Gabriel Waweru officiating. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd and will continue the hour before services at the church on Thursday. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, it is preferred that memorials be made to St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd, the Brainerd American Legion Auxiliary, Harmony House or Heartland Hospice.

Her family extends a special thank you to Heartland Hospice and Harmony House staff that provided such good care to Doris.
