James was born in Lake Edward Township in rural Brainerd, Minn., at the home of his paternal grandparents, Lillian (Snell) and Louis Bedore on June 15, 1935, to Charles Louis and Jolie Avis (James) Bedore.

After suffering from polio as a child, James decided to pursue a career in the medical field. After graduating from Brainerd High School in 1953, he went on to attend Northwestern College of Chiropractic. He was able to achieve his doctorate in 1956, graduating with honors in Cum Laude, Alpha Chi, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Alpha. During his college tenure, he served as president of the student council and held an office in the Chi Omega Phi fraternity. He also did post-graduate training after obtaining his doctorate. Following graduation, he served his internship and then joined the U.S. Army as an officer. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he opened a chiropractic clinic in Caledonia, Minn. He practiced for several years and was then recalled to the Army, where he again served as a doctor in support of our troops. After leaving the service for the second time, he relocated to California where he lived for 20 years. When he retired, he wanted to be closer to his childhood home, and he returned to the Brainerd area.

Known to his family and friends as “Doc,” he was always ready to challenge you in a game of cards. He was known for his love of animals, having given a loving home to many rescued dogs and cats. Doc was an avid collector of antiques and fine art and enjoyed capturing scenes from his travels in his original oil paintings. His favorite place was his lake cabin, where he enjoyed many wonderful times with family and friends.

James was preceded in death by his parents; his sister; and his grandparents. A funeral service will be held at the Halverson-Johnson Funeral Chapel in Brainerd on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. with visitation from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
