Laura L. (Helmberger) Reed
Laura Lee (Helmberger) Reed, 59 years old, passed away peacefully at Essentia Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Brainerd, Minn., on May 3, 2012. She went to be with the Lord after a lengthy 10-year illness. Laura was born in Canby, Minn., and was raised in Albert Lea, Minn. She graduated from Albert Lea Senior High school in 1970. Laura worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant helping the elderly for 15 years. She and her husband relocated to the Motley area on Lake Lena in 1986 so that her husband could teach in the Robotics program in Staples. Laura became so interested in robotics that she enrolled in the program and graduated with honors in 1991 with an AAS degree in Robots and Automated Systems from Staples Technical Institute. Laura then worked in the family robotics business, URC Automation, with her husband helping to build many industrial robot systems for the recreational, automotive, and military industries.
Laura was friendly to everyone and was known for having her beloved dogs, Pudlik and Samson with her. Laura loved to needlepoint, fish, and garden and was a self-taught gourmet cook. She loved working on her various garden plots and planted thousands of annuals and perennials over a 20-year span living in her dream log home overlooking Lake Lena. She created a beautiful garden at Central Minnesota Senior Care in Brainerd, Minn., where she resided the last few years. Laura loved the care givers, friends and dog, Radar at CMSC that took care of her in her last years.
Survived by her husband, Randy of 35 years; parents, Vincent and Violet Helmberger, of Central Point, Ore.; brother, Gary Helmberger, of Plymouth, Minn.; sisters, Mary Jo Smith, of New Jersey, and Cheryl Fenton, of California.
Preceded in death by her twin brothers, Thomas and Donald Helmberger.
