Matthew J. Torfin, beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and dear friend, passed away May 15, 2012, in Atlanta, at the age of 36, unexpectedly due to heart complications.

Matthew was born on Oct. 13, 1975, in Brainerd, Minn., to James and Nedra Torfin.

He attended Brainerd High School in Brainerd, Minn. He continued his education at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Global Studies and Communications. Matt was a very successful business man and worked for Up With People, Alaska Airlines, Madison Hospitality Group, Starwood Hotels, Northwest Airlines and currently Delta Airlines.

Matt’s passion for traveling came from his Grandma Dottie. In college he studied abroad in Trinidad, Jordan and Norway. Matt continued traveling into his career and saw much of the world. He is described by his family, friends and co-workers as kind, caring, compassionate; a role model for what any person would strive to be. Matt was adventurous, filled with laughter and smiles; with incredible humor and a willingness to help others. Matt was loved by many people and will be deeply missed. Heaven is blessed to have him.

He has survived by his mother, Nedra (Nelson) Torfin; sisters, Jenny (Troy) Peterson, Kelly (Phil) Ukes; and brother, Jeff (Gwen) Torfin; and nephew, Trent Midthun.

Matt was preceded in death by his father, James Torfin; and his grandparents, Clinton (C.L.) and Dorothy Nelson and Clint and Wanda Torfin; uncles, Gary Torfin and Rick Torfin.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 19 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd. The visitation will be held on Friday, May 18 from 4-7 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be made in memory of Matt to the medical research of Idiopathic Hypertrophic Subaortic Stenosis (IHSS), a heart disease.

Other memorials can be given to Trinity Lutheran Church.
