AITKIN — Dorothy Miles, 86, of Aitkin, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. She was born Dec. 4, 1925, in Chisholm to Emanuel and Helmi (Elkie) Lidberg. The family moved to the Menahga area when she was two years old and later to the Aitkin area near Rossburg. She graduated from Aitkin High School in 1943. She spent some months in Racine, Wis., helping an uncle and his family. She then moved to Minneapolis to work and stayed with an aunt and uncle until she entered the Cadet Nurse Corp. She moved back to Aitkin and worked as a bookkeeper for Ralph Miles at his sawmill. She met Karl Miles there when he came home from the service in 1946. They were united in marriage Dec. 15, 1946, and lived in Aitkin for a few years until they bought and moved to a farm on Lone Lake where they had cattle and a large garden. They moved to an apartment in Aitkin in the fall of 2009. She worked at the courthouse and other places until spending many years working at the Aitkin Nursing Home and the hospital until her retirement. She was a past member of the Eastern Star and a member of First Lutheran Church where she was leader of the Lydia Circle, and taught Sunday school for many years. Dorothy and Karl had five children and also took care of a niece and nephew for over seven years while their dad was in the service. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, reading, word puzzles, and being with family and friends.

Dorothy is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Gary (Barb) Miles, of Big Fork, Brian (Connie) Miles, of St. Cloud; daughters and son-in-law, Frances Schoneck, of Linwood, Colo., Karla (Randy) Patrick, of Aitkin; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Rengo, Carol Luoma, Donna Rice.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl; son, Karl Bruce Miles; four brothers; one sister; and her parents.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, at First Lutheran Church in Aitkin. The Rev. Robert Munekke and the Rev. Daryl Pedersen will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.
