Paul V. Hansen

Paul Verner Hansen, 82, of Baxter, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Paul, the 10th child of 11 children, was born the son of Danish immigrants Gustav and Mary (Petersen Hvid) Hansen on May 29, 1930, on the family farm in Wildrose, N.D. Paul graduated from High School in Wildrose in the spring of 1948. He enlisted in the Navy in the fall of 1948 and served in the Korean War aboard the U.S.S.C.S. Sperry DD697 as a radar man. He was honorably discharged Oct. 13, 1952.

After returning from the Navy, Paul entered North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo, N.D. On Nov. 21, 1953, Paul married the love of his life, Shirley Anne Lee at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Williston, N.D. He graduated from NDAC in June of 1956 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture.

Paul worked as Assistant County Agent for Becker County in Detroit Lakes, Minn. In Nov. 1959 they moved their young family to Willmar, Minn., where he had taken a position with Land O’Lakes Creameries in their agricultural service department.

In 1966, Paul began working with the Farmer’s Home Administration as an Agricultural Management Specialist and worked for them in the Minnesota communities of Long Prairie, Ada, Moorhead, Litchfield and finally Brainerd, where he retired in 1988. Upon his retirement he provided care for his father-in-law, Adolph Lee for a number of years.

Christian Faith was important to Paul. He and Shirley Anne were charter members of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter, where he served in various capacities. Paul enjoyed photography, gardening and was a member of the Paul Bunyan Garden Club in Brainerd. He and Shirley Anne traveled the United States and always looked forward to going “home” to the Hansen family farm on the North Dakota prairie. Paul always kept in touch with his agricultural background, attending the Rollag Steam Thresher’s Reunion, discussing farming practices with friends and keeping an eye on the crops across the countryside. He enjoyed reading, especially literature on history, socializing with his many family and friends, following his grandchildren and their endeavors and was a fan of sports of all kinds especially the Minnesota Twins and NDSU Football.

Paul is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Anne; his children: Lee, of Edina, Sybel (Carl) of Des Moines, Washington, and Kurt (Linda) of Park Rapids; Grandchildren: Taylor of Roseville, Jacob of New Brighton, Laura of Sioux City, Iowa and Eleanor of Portland, Ore.; and sisters; Ruth Klevjord, Viola Hover and Betty McCoy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harry, Morris, Axel, LeRoy and Dan; sisters Ellen, Alice, and daughter-in-law Lori Hansen.

A memorial service is planned for 11:00 a.m. Friday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Lake Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield, Minn.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Carmel Ministries or Lord of Life Lutheran Church of Baxter.
