Genevieve C. (Green) Borden

MERRIFIELD — Genevieve Catherine (Green) Borden, of Merrifield, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Edgewood Vista in Brainerd. Gen was born on May 24, 1919, at home on the farm in Motley, Minn.

Gen attended country school in Cass County High School in Little Falls and Brainerd, Normal School, Bemidji and St. Cloud Colleges. She taught elementary school in Perham, Merrifield, Emily, Jenkins and Pequot Lakes. She was the elementary principal at Pequot Lakes until her retirement in 1984.

Gen married Wendell “Barney” Borden on Dec. 23, 1944, in Brainerd. Wendell was drafted into the Army for World War II and Gen taught school in Georgia. They returned to the Borden farm on Creek Road in Merrifield and farmed 160 acres and raised six children. In 1960 Gen began teaching again.

Gen celebrated her life through nature as she shared her connection with creation by gardening, bird watching, and sipping tea on the covered swing. She left memories of sauerkraut gatherings, pickle making and tea parties. She is fondly remembered as the grandmother who played Hide the Thimble, read stories and allowed creativity through wood forts, yarn tangles, and the Cousins Club.

Gen is survived by her children, Gwen (Vince) Carleton-Gillen, Clifford (Debra) Borden, Rodney (Sue) Borden, Mary Jane (Jeff) Austin, Janet (Marv) Soldner and Patrick Borden. She was Grandma Gen to 22 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Gen was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell; her parents, Clifford and Ann (Schlerman) Green; her sister, Margaret (Green) Hall; her brother, Thomas Green; and two great-grandchildren.

Gen volunteered at Birthright for 15 years. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Birthright in her honor.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd with Father Tony Wroblewski officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd and will continue the hour before service at the church on Saturday.
