Robert M. Hanson
Robert Morris Hanson passed away on Aug. 23, 2013, at Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd. Robert was born July 29, 1924, to Olaf and Adeline (Mathison) Hanson in Detroit Lakes, Minn. The family moved to Chokio, Minn. He was baptized June 12, 1938, at Artichoke Baptist Church in Correll, Minn. They farmed at Chokio until 1942 when they moved to Nisswa, Minn. Upon graduation from Pequot Lakes High School in 1943, he entered the Army and served in the South Pacific, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and Japan where he was a Master Sergeant. During WWII he served in Radar, as a Supply Sergeant and Chaplain’s Assistant. He returned home in March 1946 as a reserve and was called back in 1950 to serve in the Korean War.
He married Betty Lou Kruger Feb. 4, 1947. They had five children: David, Nancy, Bonnie, Gregory and Peggy.
He attended Dunwoody Institute. He worked as an electrician at St. Peter State Hospital and Cambridge State Hospital.
In 1955 he became an Electrical Representative for the State Board of Electricity and worked out of Grand Rapids, Minn. From there he moved to Brainerd and was the Power Use Advisor at Crow Wing Power Electric Cooperative for seven years.
He opened Bob Hanson Electric, Inc. in 1964 and was in business for over 30 years. He was in the electrical field for 47 years.
He was a member of the American Legion Ben Krueger Post 49 in Pequot Lakes. He also belonged to the Gideons in Brainerd and had Jail Ministry for many years. He attended Christ Community Church in Nisswa.
He’ll be sadly missed by family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Betty; children, David (Cathy), of Texas, Nancy (Paul) Schmidt, of Jenkins, Bonnie (Bruce) Toftness, of Brainerd, Peggy Thomsen, of Nisswa; 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; sister, Marion Alleva, of Florida; brothers, Don, of Ohio, and Jim, of Pine River.
He was preceded in death by son, Gregory in 2002; parents; brother, Oliver and wife Lee; sister, Ileane and husband Marlin Swanson; and brother-in-law, Nicholas Alleva.
Services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at Christ Community Church of Nisswa at 1 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to the services at the church.
Interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Nisswa following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Christ Community Church of Nisswa.
