Crow Wing County Deputy James Peterson found more than he was looking for when he searched for a fawn near a car-deer accident on Hwy 371. He found a North Dakota prison escapee. The man was lying in the woods and tried to run away. Peterson tackled him.

30 years ago (1982)

Crow Wing County employees may have shorter work weeks and the courthouse might be closed an extra day per week if commissioners adopt certain money-saving proposals being considered. Board chair Al Hauge said they will cut salary expense by 10 percent.

40 years ago (1972)

“I’ve never had a boy treat me unkindly in any way, shape or form.” That’s a remarkable record for Mrs. Pearl Jordan, who retires today after 22 years as executive secretary for the county Selective Service Board. But the job has been tougher in the Vietnam era.

The pill of defeat was administered to the contingent of baseball players representing St. Cloud by the Brainerd aggregation at Athletic Field in St. Cloud, after eleven innings of the national pastime by a score of 3 to 2. Fred Cook fanned seven for Brainerd.
