20 years ago (1992)

Swarming defense has been a Warrior football trademark for years, thanks to defensive coordinator Steve Nunnink, linebacker coach Scott Parsons and secondary coach Mark Embretson. The defense swarmed St. Cloud Apollo 21-0 in the Warriors home opener.

30 years ago (1982)

“This was our best effort so far – solid; our defense played well,” said Warrior football coach Ron Stolski after a 24-0 battering of spirited Little Falls. The Flyers keyed on Tim Veith, but Dale McCollough ran for 168 yards and two TDs in 17 carries.

40 years ago (1972)

Joe Ahlers, runnerup to Leo Marchel, Sr. in the 1969 tournament, claimed his first men’s championship at Brainerd Country Club with a victory over Ray Shortridge. On the women’s side, Beatsie Fieldman topped Lindsay Willis for her 7th straight title.

60 years ago (1952)

(Adv.) Sunday through Wednesday at the Brainerd Theatre, see Bob Hope and Jane Russell in “Son of Paleface,” also featuring Roy Rogers and Trigger. At the Paramount Theatre it’s “Outcasts of Poker Flat,” starring Dale Robertson and Anne Baxter.

80 years ago (1932)

Cold weather and wet grounds have forced postponement of the scheduled baseball game between the C-I Ore Diggers and Brainerd at the new Bane Park. No word as to whether the game will be played later. C-I won the first encounter by a score of 7 to 5.

100 years ago (1912)

The man who took a dive into the goldfish pond at Gregory Park has eventually been located. He is a tie peeler or what is known as a tie bucker at the tie plant and his comrades, to commemorate the event, have dubbed him “gold fish.”
