20 years ago (1992)

Board members were elected at a meeting of the Crow Wing County Fair Assn. at the Elks Club. Elected were: Ross Kunkel, president; Ray Norrgard, VP; and Phyllis Henze, manager/secretary/treasurer. Jack Fish and Clayton Eisel were re-elected to the board.

30 years ago (1982)

The Minnesota Supreme Court has turned down convicted fire bomber John Rieck’s attempt to reduce his prison sentence – ironically, 7 months after Rieck escaped from Stillwater State Prison. A fellow escapee was recaptured, but Rieck is still at large.

40 years ago (1972)

It was the opening Golden Gloves bout of the season, and fans turned out in record numbers at the Brainerd Armory. Welterweight Joey Kretzman showed tournament form in taking out Crookston’s Bob Snook with a TKO in the third round of the main event.

60 years ago (1952)

The high school athletic field, until now known as Roosevelt Field, was officially named Cobb-LeBar Field by the school board. A blue-ribbon committee made the proposal to honor George LaBar, board pres. for 25 years, and Wilbur Cobb, superintendent for 30 years.

80 years ago (1932)

Franklin Ebner, Brainerd lawyer, today was conceded election as State Senator for Crow Wing and Morrison counties. He leads Gordon Rosenmeier by 450 votes. The race was for an open seat occasioned by the death of Gordon’s father, Sen. Chris Rosenmeier.

100 years ago (1912)

Ben Lagerquist has returned from Nisswa where he enjoyed the first hunt of his life and shot 21 long-eared jack rabbits. He packed the game a distance of four miles out of the woods and by the end of the trek the rabbits appeared to weigh as much as a moose.

I've worked at the Brainerd Dispatch with various duties since Dec. 7, 1983. Starting off as an Ad Designer and currently Director of Audience Development. The Dispatch has been an interesting and challenging place to work. I'm fortunate to have made many friends, both co-workers and customers.
