40 years ago (1972)

The old Brainerd water tower and the headquarters building and shops at the railroad yards have been added to the State Inventory of Historic Sites, part of a nation-wide preservation move. They are being considered for the National Register of Historic Sites.

60 years ago (1952)

Superior shooting ability won out over better rebounding as the Warriors put on a closing rush to beat Melrose 55-49 in a game played at St. John’s University gym. Bill Selisker had 17 points to lead Brainerd, while Byron Skoog had 10 and Rod Skoog had 11.

80 years ago (1932)

Activity of game wardens stationed in the Mille Lacs area was emphasized by the confiscation of 28 deer. Most were for illegal shipping of animals. The deer were sent to St. Paul, where they were put on sale by the state Game and Fish Department.

100 years ago (1912)

Julius Deering and Bob Mathews killed a deer and a wolf near Brainerd. The wolf was of the timber variety, and when Mathew saw it, he grabbed his knife and chased it until he remembered he was also carrying a gun. The bounty on the beast will come to $15.
